Title

Synthesis-Driven Approach to Quantum Materials

Abstract

Synthesis of new materials is often the key starting point for advancing our fundamental understanding of underlying physics as well as pursuing technological development. In this talk I will present our synthesis-driven approach to design and discover new quantum materials. I will start by giving a broad overview of such materials – What are they? Why do we need them? How do we find or design them? What are the opportunities and challenges? I will use our results on two of our main projects to answer these questions. In particular, I will talk about kagome magnets, and a recently realized new class of magnets dubbed “altermagnets.” These materials bear potential for energy efficient technology.
