Title

Semiconductor Education and Workforce Development: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

Over the last three years, global affairs have exposed many issues with the semiconductor supply chain which has become known as the "Chip Shortage." There have been several positive developments, such as the construction of new foundries and legislation designed to motivate increased fabrication of integrated circuits necessary to meet economic demand. However, in order to meet the goals of these initiatives, we must cultivate a new generation of scientists and engineers capable of contributing to the development of integrated circuit design at every level of abstraction. Current estimates indicate the United States has a deficit of seventy thousand semiconductor engineers. The overwhelming focus of EDA education is at the Masters and Doctoral levels, which is not sufficient to meet this growing and crucial need. While making semiconductor education more available at Bachelors, Associates, Vocational, and High School levels is easier said than done, making EDA education accessible is essential to meeting the long-term economic demands from our industry. In this talk, I will discuss the current state of semiconductor education in the United States, as well initiatives and opportunities we are working on at Notre Dame to strengthen these initiatives.
