3-in-1 Workshop: Preparing for a Successful Research Symposium

Summer undergraduate researchers can prepare for the late-July summer research symposium by learning how to put together an excellent presentation in this 3-in-1 workshop!

"Finding Relevant Library Resources"
Presenter: William Baer, Engineering Librarian, Hesburgh Libraries

Students will learn how to find and use articles to develop presentations, create simple literature reviews, and find and evaluate specific scholarly materials for all disciplines.  

12:00 - 12:45 p.m.
"Communicating Your Research Effectively"
Presenter: Patrick Gibbons, Adjunct Teaching Professor, Fanning Center for Business Communications, Mendoza College of Business

Students will understand the creative process of presenting their research projects during the annual poster session from beginning a speech outline to putting the final touches on their presentations. Students will receive helpful tools and methods to develop and present compelling stories about their work and its impact.

"Creating an Effective Research Poster"

 Ouimet, Graduate Student, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, Phillip Lab
Students will learn how to design a scientific poster that attracts the reader's eye, uses the right amount of background for contextual clarity, and conveys research results clearly and without hyperbole. The mechanics of putting everything together on the poster, including charts, graphics, references, and acknowledgments, will be covered. Students will also learn how to develop an oral presentation about their research that will leave the reader with a deeper appreciation for the significance of their results, technical skills, and intellectual contributions to the research project.
