Edison Lecture: In Pursuit of the Perfect Plastic

Join us at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 in 127 Nieuwland Science Hall for an Edison Lecture Series talk, “In Pursuit of the Perfect Plastic,” with Geoffrey W. Coates, the Tisch University Professor at Cornell University.

Society depends on polymeric materials more now than at any other time in history. Although synthetic polymers are indispensable in a diverse array of applications, ranging from commodity packaging and structural material to technologically complex biomedical and electronic devices, their synthesis and disposal pose important environment challenges. The focus of Coates’ research will focus on our research to transition from fossil fuels to renewable resources for polymer synthesis, as well as the development of polymeric materials designed to bring positive benefits to the environment.

The talk is sponsored by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the College of Engineering.
