It provides the necessary space, services and expertise for idea development, commercialization, business formation, prototyping, entrepreneurial education, and student entrepreneurial efforts. The IDEA Center, located across the street from campus, is designed to bring the best Notre Dame faculty, staff, and student ideas and innovations to market.
Ignition Park sits on the grounds of the former Studebaker Corporation in downtown South Bend, the legendary auto manufacturer that was once the economic and innovative backbone of the city. Since 2000, abandoned buildings on the Ignition Park site have been demolished in the state’s most aggressive brownfield reclamation effort to make way for a high-tech manufacturing, commercialization and office complex of buildings arrayed in a park like environment. Since work began on Ignition Park, several million dollars have been invested on new streets, curbs, utilities, and lighting. The City has also designed the infrastructure to include two redundant utility loops to ensure continuous service and maximum efficiency. The first is an electric power grid; the second is the Metronet, a dark fiber network. Notre Dame's Turbomachinery Laboratory is one of the Park's tenants.
