The University of Notre Dame will attend the 2016 BIO International Convention, which is hosted by the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) from June 6 – 9, 2016 in San Francisco. The convention is described as the largest event for the biotechnology industry and attracts the biggest names in biotech, offers key networking opportunities, and provides insights and inspiration on the major trends affecting the industry.
Represented Notre Dame Research groups at the event include the Harper Cancer Research Institute (HCRI), the Center for Nano Science and Technology (NDnano), as well as Technology Transfer. When discussing the event, Karen Deak of Technology Transfer said, “This is an incredibly useful event for corporate and academic institutions within this industry to engage with organizations throughout the biotechnology pipeline.” She continued, “BIO provides the University an opportunity to showcase biotech and life sciences research with commercialization potential and move these discoveries from the bench to the marketplace.”
At the convention, Technology Transfer will highlight licensed or trademarked enterprises and product designs cultivated from various Notre Dame research projects. Some of the projects that will be discussed include exosomes purification from body fluids research by Jeff Schorey, George B. Craig Jr. Professor of Biological Sciences, as well as accelerated penetration systems for staining tissues research by Siyuan Zhang, Dee Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences and HCRI-affiliated faculty member.
Zhang’s research has lead to Reveal3D™, an all-in-one platform that automatically processes tissue biopsies. The results provide a data-rich three-dimensional image of a tumor as well as its surrounding environment, allowing clinicians to identify the various diseases within a singular tumor sample in addition to information regarding how the cancer is evolving in real-time. Reveal3D™ helps lower chances of misdiagnosis and allows researchers to see up to 1,000 times more information than current two-dimensional technologies.
Additionally, University of Notre Dame alumni near the San Francisco Bay area and visitors in town for the BIO event are encouraged to attend a Notre Dame networking event hosted at Zynga, Inc. Taking place on Tuesday, June 7th, from 6 to 8 PM, the event will provide attendees the opportunity to receive an in-depth view of the variety of research that is supported by Advanced Diagnostics and Therapeutics, HCRI, NDnano, Innovation Park, and Technology Transfer.
