NSF’s Translational Research Funding Opportunities

Dr. Prakash Balan is Program Director at the National Science Foundation with the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships. In this presentation, he will describe how researchers and innovators can take advantage of the rich funding opportunities that NSF provides in moving basic research forward through technology development, towards commercialization.

Dr. Balan has broad experience spanning R&D, new technology development, and commercialization in both large and small entrepreneurial company environments. He co-founded two companies that served to commercialize his innovations. He holds 12 US patents, many of which are in full commercial use today. At the NSF, he has managed a wide spectrum of research funding programs that focus on moving basic research towards industrial applications. These include the Small Business Innovation Program, Grants Opportunity for Academic Liaison with industry Program (GOALI), the Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) Program, the INTERN program for grad student internships, and the Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers Program.
