Title: Operando Spectroscopy in Catalysis, Membranes, and Beyond
Dr. Casey O’Brien, Assistant Professor
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Abstract

Operando spectroscopy is the methodology in which the structure of a catalytic material is analyzed spectroscopically while the reaction products are measured simultaneously. By characterizing the catalyst structure and analyzing the reaction products simultaneously, it is possible to elucidate reaction mechanisms and to identify catalyst structure-function relationships. In effect, operando spectroscopy enables a more rational design of catalytic materials than is possible with ex-situ spectroscopic techniques. While this methodology has been applied almost exclusively to the study of catalytic materials, other research areas would benefit greatly by adopting the operando tools and techniques. In this presentation, I will first demonstrate the utility of operando spectroscopy in elucidating catalytic reaction mechanisms. Then I will discuss how the operando methodology can be applied to understand transport mechanisms in gas separation membranes. Finally, I will discuss other areas that could benefit from the operando spectroscopy methodology.

Title: Multiscale Energy Systems Engineering: Batteries and Beyond
Dr. Alexander Dowling, Assistant Professor
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Abstract

Developing sustainable energy technologies in an inherently multiscale problem. In this talk, I will briefly present our work on applying mathematical modeling and large-scale optimization to facilitate engineering decision-making across broad length and time-scale. As an illustrative example, I will present new insights on how battery degradation impacts the overall economics and optimal sizing of grid-scale energy storage. In conclusion, I will share some emerging collaborations just starting at Notre Dame, all of which focus on integrating systems-scale to nano-scale insights to develop innovative energy technologies.
