NDnano Seminar: Recent Advances in Perpendicular Nanomagnetic Logic

Dr.-Ing. Stephan Breitkreutz-v. Gamm, Technical University of Munich
Research Associate at the Institute for Technical Electronics, Department for Electrical and Computer Engineering, Munich, Germany

Abstract

Perpendicular Nanomagnetic Logic (pNML) is an emerging beyond-CMOS technology employing the 3-dimensional field-coupling of bistable nanomagnets to perform logic operations. Nonvolatility, majority logic, high density integration, low power computing, zero leakage and CMOS compatibility are key features of pNML. In this presentation, recent advances of 3D-integrated pNML circuits are shown. First, the working principles of pNML devices and their modeling are introduced. Afterwards, pNML is reviewed in terms of physical measures and operational reliability. Monolithic 3D devices are introduced and concepts for signal routing and CMOS integration are discussed. Finally, the presentation will outline future challenges in the development of NML circuits.

Dr.-Ing. Stephan Breitkreutz-v. Gamm is a research associate at the Institute for Technical Electronics at Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany and head of the research group for Nanomagnetic Logic (NML) devices. The research of the NML team at TUM is focused on the development and experimental demonstration of NML devices as well as on its modeling and the simulation of NML circuits and systems. The expert knowledge of his team comprises the fabrication of nanomagnetic devices as well as focused ion beam techniques and magneto-optical microscopy. Stephan Breitkreutz-v. Gamm received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2015 at TUM and has been awarded with the Dr. Wilhelmy-Stiftungspreis 2015 for his excellent dissertation. He is an IEEE member and part of the IEEE Magnetics Society and the Electron Devices Society. He has authored and co-authored more than 50 publications and contributed to the pathbreaking 2014 Magnetism Roadmap. He worked as reviewer for Nano Letters and Nature Communications and gave several presentations at flagship conferences on electrical engineering, magnetism and nanotechnology (e.g., ESSDERC, IEDM, MMM, IEEE NANO).
