2014 Project Summaries

NDnano undergraduate researchers share summer fellowship highlights

Katie O'Neill 2014 Symposium

In 2014, 29 students were part of the NDnano Undergraduate Research Fellowship (NURF) program. The students, who worked for 10 weeks with the research team of an NDnano faculty member, have each prepared a summary of their project (see below). The summaries highlight skills acquired by the students, software and equipment used during the course of their research, and related publications or posters submitted.

"The NURF program provides aspiring engineers and scientists the rare and exciting opportunity to collaborate with world-renowned nanotechnology researchers on projects that may ultimately contribute to products and solutions that yield significant societal benefits," commented Dr. David Balkin, managing director of NDnano.

The fellowship experience includes time and learning opportunities inside and outside the lab, including safety and equipment training, simulations and experiments, a seminar series, and the chance to showcase their work at the summer undergraduate research symposium.

"The NURF program is an excellent opportunity for research, a job experience, and a wonderful academic environment to work in," said Rene Celis Cordova, one of two students in the 2014 program from Technológico de Monterrey (Mexico). "It was the best experience I can imagine for a scientific summer."

Sam O'Mahoney 2014 Symposium

NDnano fellowship recipients in 2014 also included students from Notre Dame, Purdue College of Technology, Chicago State University, Union College, Amrita University and Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (both in India), Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, and Dublin City University (all in Ireland). Funding for many of the students from Ireland was made possible through the support of the Naughton Fellowship Program, which also funds summer research in Ireland for several Notre Dame students.

Interested in summer research for next summer?  The application process for the 2015 NURF program will open January 13.
